We were blessed to have one of our small group members open up their parents’ condo in Oscoda, Michigan for our married couples’ retreat. Right after our Sunday Celebration, we headed up north to get away from the ordinary things of life and strengthen our marriages and our relationships with one another.
We had a great time playing Battle of the Sexes Sunday night. Thank God for some of the men in our group who knew some “girly” stuff, but in the end the female gender won (if we’d just had more of the sports trivia and beer commercial stuff then the outcome would have been different). After some sessions on building up our marriages and building up the church, we went out canoeing on the famous Au Sable River. We had a little scare with our oldest son, but we all made it through the 1.5 hour journey down the river.
Even though retreats are for building up our spiritual lives, I realized that sometimes it is simply “doing life” in a different environment. This is when a lot of teaching moments come – and there are always plenty of lessons. Our group got closer to one another and renewed in our purpose. Now we are ready for a new season of ministry.
