The Madness of Black Friday

In the last two years, Christina and I have participated in the Black Friday madness. We have been able to get some good deals last year, but this year we decided to take a break from all the madness. It might be rooted in a slight protest from all the consumerism.

In fact, the last couple of years, I have seen the worst in people come out. If some of you doubt the depravity of humankind, then just go out to a Black Friday event at 5AM and it will enlighten you to this theological principle. It really reveals a lot about human nature.

This is why when I read about the Wal-Mart stampede and the Toys R Us shooting it just made me sad.

Sometimes when we are so focused on a goal (getting the deal on the merchandise), we forget about things around us. It just reminded me of how self-focused and self-absorbed we can get – I know that this is what happened to me last year.

When all the dust settles, I hope that people will be able to put everything in perspective.
